“THE AMERICAN” DIET – REBOOT!
Roadtrip edition: Great Northern (U.S. 2)
Mackinac Island, MI
This roadtrip runs the top border of the U.S. from Bangor, Maine to Seattle, Washington. There is a segment that crosses over into Canada: Ontario and Quebec. However, since this series focuses on American roadtrips, we skip that portion. You can do a part of this roadtrip, fly between the Canadian segments, take a long detour around the lakes, or drive all of it by visiting beautiful cities in Canada.
Mackinac Island is known for:
- Pronounced MACK-i-naw
- No cars allowed on the island!
- 8 mile long island on Lake Huron
- Fort Holmes
- Bob Seger
- John Jacob Astor’s fur trading headquarters
- Fort Mackinaw
- Fudgies
- ~600 live there year round, ~1M visitors per year
- “Somewhere in Time” was filmed here
- Weird law/lore: cars are banned except for police and fire vehicles
- And more!
WHAT TO DO?
Explore the Straits of Mackinac aboard your choice of single kayak, tandem kayak, or stand up paddleboard (#ad). Their guides have been paddling the local waterways for over 20 years, and will show you the best of Mackinac from the water, providing you with a safe and rewarding experience every time.
WHAT TO EAT? Citrus Crusted Whitefish at the Grand Hotel’s Main Dining Room
Mackinac Island is known for their whitefish, sourced locally. You can enjoy a fine dining dinner of Citrus Herb Crusted Whitefish with Potato Purée and Smoked Nage at the Grand Hotel.
The Grand Hotel’s Main Dining Room overlooks the world’s longest porch displaying the hotel’s many American flags, as well as the glistening Straits of Mackinac. Sit down for dinner while enjoying music by the Grand Hotel Orchestra. You may even catch a glimpse of the bellmen taking down the flags for the day — a sunset tradition.

REBOOT! RECIPE: Lemon Whitefish
Here is an easy recipe that you can make with any white fish (like Cod or Halibut) if Whitefish aren’t available in your area.
Health benefits from this recipe:
- Fish is a great source of lean protein, just 3 ounces has about 21g of protein!
- The citrus adds vitamin C besides being a great compliment to the fish.
- Olive oil is a healthy fat. Used in moderation, it is a healthy compliment to your diet.
- For those who follow low carb diets, here you go!
