“THE AMERICAN” DIET – REBOOT!

Roadtrip edition: Great Northern (U.S. 2)

Bayfield,WI

This roadtrip runs the top border of the U.S. from Bangor, Maine to Seattle, Washington. There is a segment that crosses over into Canada: Ontario and Quebec. However, since this series focuses on American roadtrips, we skip that portion. You can do a part of this roadtrip (which is still substantial), or fly between the Canadian segments, or take a long detour around the lakes, or drive all of it by visiting beautiful cities in Canada.

Bayfield is known for:

  • Population: 443
  • Situated on Lake Superior
  • Voted one of the Best Coastal Small Towns in 2020 by USA Today
  • Bayfield in Bloom and the Apple festivals
  • The Gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
  • Berry Capital of Wisconsin
  • Weird law/lore: In 1935, the state authority enacted a law that forced restaurants to serve apple pie with cheese. This law was later repealed in 1937.

WHAT TO DO?

Kayak the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Trek & Trail is an outfitter that offers rentals, guided paddling excursions, and overnight adventures. For the last 30 years, they have safely been introducing visitors to the world of sea kayaking and to the natural wonders of the Apostle Islands, the Meyers Beach Sea Caves, and the Bayfield peninsula’s shoreline. Rent a sea kayak and join them on your own adventure! https://trek-trail.com

WHAT TO EAT?

Stop by Patsy’s Bar and Grill (in nearby Washburn) on Fridays for Fish Fry Friday.

Opened in the late 1800s, it is rumored that at one time Patsy’s was also a brothel. Now, Patsy’s prides themselves on their deep fried White Fish, locally sourced from Bodin Fisheries Lake Superior. They serve it with lemon, french fries, a roll and homemade coleslaw & tarter sauce.

Be sure to order a side of Wisconsin cheese curds, a Miller beer, and if they have it, some apple pie for the true Wisconsin experience!

REBOOT! RECIPE: Oven-fried White Fish

Here is a recipe for oven baked white fish that uses cereal as the breading (for crunch) and is then baked, instead of fried. Try serving it with some steamed broccoli rabe.
