Tibet: Tibetan Momo (Steamed Filled Dumplings)
Tibet is an autonomous region of China and borders the northern side of the Himalayas. It shares Mt. Everest with Nepal. Mt. Everest is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level.
As you can expect, most Tibetan dishes are hearty and satisfying to help keep Tibetans warm in the cold weather. Popular ingredients are yak, barley, and butter tea.
Momo is a steamed filled dumpling, native to Tibet and Nepal. The dumplings are stuffed with a cabbage, carrot, and onion filling and spiced with garlic, ginger, cilantro, and black pepper. If you are looking for a vegetarian alternative this is a fun, healthy recipe that includes protein from tofu.
WHAT’S NOT SO GREAT?
- The flour in the dumpling may be an obstacle for some who are avoiding flour.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE: Base camp at Mt. Everest
You can’t do much in Tibet without a tour guide but one thing you won’t want to miss is the tallest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest. You may not be ready to risk it all, after all many have died trying to climb Everest, but you can stay at base camp and get the thrill of adventure plus become acclimated to the altitude.
Truly a once in a lifetime experience.
