“The American Diet” – Reboot
Roadtrip Edition (U.S. 2 aka the Great Northern)
This roadtrip runs the top border of the U.S. from Bangor, Maine to Seattle, Washington. There is a segment that crosses over into Canada: Ontario and Quebec. However, since this series focuses on American roadtrips, we skip that portion. You can do a part of this roadtrip which is still substantial, fly between the Canadian segments, take a long detour around the lakes, or drive all of it by visiting some beautiful cities in Canada.
Bangor is known for:
- Paul Bunyan statue
- Stephen King’s former home
- Maine Forest and Logging Museum
- American Folk Festival
- Established by lumber and shipbuilding industries
- MODOK
- Penobscot Indian Island Reservation
- Weird law/lore: You will be fined if your holiday lights are left up any later than Jan. 14
- And more!
WHAT TO DO?
Cross country skiing at Acadia National Park.
Forty-five miles of carriage roads in the park offer the perfect setting for cross country skiing. Ski tracks are sometimes laid down by volunteers on sections of the carriage roads when snowfall exceeds four inches, nearly 32 miles are designated for grooming when conditions and time permit.
It’s a full body workout! Unlike alpine skiing, cross-country skiing involves gliding across relatively flat terrain, relying on your own power and strength to get you from point A to B. Along the way you’ll enjoy nature, scenery, and either comradery if you are with friends or the quiet peace of the environment if you are solo.
You can rent equipment from Mount Desert Island.
WHAT TO EAT?
Wild Maine Blueberry Pie at Dysart’s Restaurant and Truck Stop.
If you’re looking for fancy, this ain’t it. Since 1967, Dysart’s has been serving truckers and travelers good homestyle comfort food. After you’ve tried their Yankee Pot Roast, settle down for a nice piece of Blueberry Pie. Dysart’s was even featured on Food Paradise!
“A favorite made from wild Maine Blueberries combined with a hint of cinnamon.”

REBOOT! RECIPE: Blueberry Pie
Of course, fresh blueberries are super healthy as they are loaded with the antioxidant, anthocyanin! They also have 24% Vitamin K and 16% Vitamin C per cup.
The healthiest way to treat them would probably be a blueberry crisp. However, if you really want a blueberry pie, here’s a recipe that is made without any refined sugar, it is sweetened with honey and blueberries!
