WHAT TO DO?

Swim in the ocean at Cape Cod National Seashore.

Only open with lifeguards during the summer months, what a beautiful way to enjoy Cape Cod. You may even meet Jaws’ grandson but only if you don’t follow the rules. Too much excitement for you? The park has many other activities, tours, music events, etc. planned throughout the summer, just visit their website for more info. Here is one:

Don’t You Wanna’ Walk to the Beach? – 2 hours, 1.5 miles. Through stories and activities, a ranger will take you on an imaginative journey to explore and connect with the critters that call Cape Cod “home.”

WHAT TO EAT?

Cape Cod Lobster Roll at The Friendly Fisherman.

The Friendly Fisherman is located in North Eastham. You aren’t headed here for the beautiful water views but instead for the great lobster rolls, which for lobster aren’t terribly overpriced. They serve them cold, which means with mayonnaise and lettuce on a lobster roll bun. Sit outside at the picnic tables and be forewarned there’s no real bathroom, just a port-o-potty.

Really miss the views? Get your lobster rolls to go and head to one of the nearby beaches with your chairs. Just don’t let the lobster roll sit for too long before eating. Not that you would. $$ friendlyfishermaneastham.com/

REBOOT! RECIPE: Cape Cod Lobster Roll

It doesn’t take much to make a lighter version of this recipe. Simply be light-handed with the mayo, and consider an olive oil mayo, a lighter mayo, or vegenaise. Use butter very sparingly if at all. That’s right, 1 cup of Hellman’s mayo has 1440 calories and 160g fat. Here is a recipe:

afamilyfeast.com/new-england-lobster-roll/

Nutrition

  • 1/6 cup of mayo: 240 calories, 27g fat
  • 1 lobster roll: 110 calories, 1.5g of fat
  • 1 tbsp butter: 105 calories, 12g fat
  • 8 oz. of lobster: 217 calories, 2.5g fat (and 46g protein!)
  • Lettuce and onions are negligible.

So, one lobster roll, as is presented in the recipe, would be approximately 672 calories, 43g fat. If you changed the mayo up, you could lower that fat content substantially.
